Melbourne Showroom,
Behind the Design
Introducing the design direction of our first Australian showroom.
Introducing the design direction of our first Australian showroom.
To bring this vision to life, we partnered with Sebastian Negri of StudioStudio, whose deep understanding of our brand heritage – and expertise as a product designer – allowed him to translate the Baya brand and ethos into a refined physical space.
"From an interior architectural perspective, I envisioned this space to be experienced as an art gallery. Every detail, from the sliding structures to the plinths and rug library, were designed to be interacted with, similar to the behaviour that clients would have while curating art."
With the aim of creating a harmonious and flexible space, the existing workplace shell - previously housing Melbourne design Studio Hecker-Guthrie - was reimagined by stripping away solid partitions and fully opening the floor plan.
The character of the building was embraced as a foundational element. Here Negri’s design explores the beauty of contrast -restoring and respecting the building’s original features, such as polished concrete floors and rendered brickwork. These elements form the subtle backdrop for the textures, tones and design of the products to take centre stage.
Influenced by art gallery exhibition devices and the quiet intimacy of library browsing, Negri designed plinths, sliding display structures and thoughtfully placed seating to create a gallery-like browsing atmosphere.
Custom displays and cabinetry in natural timber underscore the space’s multi-purpose functionality, while layers of marble, brass, and artisanal detailing reflect Baya's values of considered design and craftsmanship.
Designed as a hybrid space, our showroom is more than a place to view products - it's a working studio for design professionals. Explore our extensive rug library, browse curated cushion and throw collections, and take home samples and fabric swatches to support your projects.
With dedicated consulting tables, the space encourages collaboration and tailored project development. Our cushion and throw collections sit alongside Tim Webber Design furniture, creating a live testing ground where ideas can take shape, materials are experienced, and new concepts are brought to life.
“It’s an absolute pleasure to collaborate with Baya at the Richmond showroom. I believe our brands share a remarkable synergy in both vision and craftsmanship. The showroom is a stunning celebration of New Zealand design, showcasing timeless pieces that bring beauty and meaning to everyday life. Having such a diverse selection of our collection on display invites people to truly experience the furniture — to touch, feel, and connect with each piece in a way that brings it to life.”
